In today’s fast-paced world, convenience often takes precedence over nutrition. What if we told you that the cost of health isn’t as high as it seems, or as frequently reported?

Welcome to the £1.19 Challenge – a campaign aiming to transform the way we think about food choices, shop for them and highlighting the value of nutrition and your wellness over convenience.

The Price of Convenience

Did you know that £1.19 is the price of a McDonalds hamburger in the UK?

While fast food may satiate our hunger for a short period, we can get hungry again quickly or feel tired and sluggish not long after – this is because it does not provide our body with any of its essential nutrients.

I tell my kids they may as well eat a piece of cardboard – the joys of having a mother who is a Nutritional Therapist!

As we know, over time processed foods can lead to detrimental health outcomes including obesity, heart disease and other chronic conditions.

Rediscovering Real Food with £1.19

The challenge is simple but powerful – I want you to see what you can get from your local greengrocer for the same £1.19.

We have partnered with our local greengrocer P Cooper and Son who are excited to offer suggestions on how you can shop smart and healthy. We have worked through a variety of suggestions of what you can get for £1.19 – there are so many. If you are not local, find your nearest fruit & veg stall and they will happily help you, even if you just want 1 piece of fruit.

Recently I bought 3 large juicy apples for £1.19. Packed with fibre (great for gut health and good poos) and Vitamin C to boost your skin health and immune system. Your burger would be finished before you are half way through an apple – and you still have 2 more left for the rest of the day or tomorrow. That is value for money.

Another time, also for £1.19, I bought a jacket sweet potato, some mushrooms and a plum, also full of fibre, vitamins and antioxidants, with numerous health benefits. Lunch and desert for £1.19!

What’s not to love? (Obvs the cooking bit is less convenient than a quick burger  – but you get my drift!).

Health Benefits of Making the Switch

Choosing fruits and vegetables over a processed burger can be transformative. Here is why:

Nutrient Rich Powerhouses

Fruits and Vegetables are nature’s nutrient powerhouses. They are low in calories but high in essential vitamins, minerals and fibre. These nutrients support various functions, including energy production, immune defence and maintaining a healthy weight.

 Heart Health and Longevity

Eating more plants can significantly reduce your risk for heart disease, the leading cause of death worldwide. Foods like apples and mushrooms are known to lower bad cholesterol and support heart health.

Feel Full for Longer

The fibre content in fruits and vegetables can help keep you feeling full longer, reducing the temptation to snack on unhealthy foods. This contributes to better weight management and overall well-being.
