How can Osteopathy help during pregnancy?

osteopathy

Well, lets start with what is Osteopathy? Osteopathy is a complementary treatment, a drug and surgery free approach which looks at the whole body to identify issues. The treatment involves the Consultant observing your movement, examining your muscles, ligaments and joints for issues, discussing with you concerns before working with manual techniques to resolve the problems identified – for example stretches, gentle movement exercises, plus massaging muscles and joints.

All this makes Osteopathy ideal for helping women during pregnancy with the aches and pains that you are often told to expect and just put up with!

A common problem is back and pelvic pain. As your pregnancy progresses (and you continue to expand!), the pain normally worsens so you need to get to the underlying cause. Osteopathy approaches the problem from a different perspective – pain means your body is struggling to adapt to the stresses and strains of pregnancy. So often gentle exercises and stretches can relieve tension thereby reducing your discomfort. These techniques also help you understand better how your body is reacting which allows you to compensate on-going with the pain triggers; for example working at a desk!

After finding out I was pregnant it was only a matter of weeks before I experiencing pain in my pelvis as I had with my first baby. I had never previously appreciated what skilled osteopath could achieve with the most subtle of manipulations but I have to say I have been amazed and so much more comfortable throughout my entire pregnancy. My previous labour caused damage to my pelvis, I as a direct result of your skills I was up and about straight after giving birth to my son. In fact, it didn't feel like I had been in labour at all!' As well as osteopaths our team includes homeopaths, acupuncturist and massage therapists so many of the issues that arise in pregnancy can be dealt with in a non-invasive, gentle, baby-friendly approach. If you require any further information about what may be relevant for you then please speak to one of our receptionists or arrange to have a chat with one of our therapists.
